Exploring south of where Adelaide now stands, on his way back to Sydney from Western Australia, Captain Collett Barker cliimbed Mount Lofty and viewed the Port River. He sailed on in his ship Isabella. A few days later he swam across the mouth of the River Murray in Lake Alexandrina. There in the sandhills he was speared by Aboriginal inhabitants of the land.

Barker's report on the land and Sturt’s reports of his journey down the Murray convinced people to found a colony in South Australia.
